Rogers experiencing massive outage of cell and internet services in Ontario and other parts of Canada – Interac Network also down

TORONTO, July 8, 2022 – Since the early hours of Friday, Rogers cell and internet service (including Rogers Ignite users but not cable users) has gone down in most of southern Ontario and numerous places nationwide. Fido wireless and interenet as well as Interac services also have gone down.

Email traffic to the Toronto Times stopped at 2:21 am which suggests the network has been down since about that time, although Downdetector, a go-to site for checking outages, has recorded a massive spike for users reporting Rogers outages since 4:57 am.

While Twitter exploded with concerns from Rogers users, the company had not issued any formal communication about the outages as of 7:30 a.m. ET. Rogers finally confirmed (just before 9 a.m. ET on Friday), via their witter account that there is an issue they are addressing.

“We are aware of issues currently affecting our networks and our teams are fully engaged to resolve the issue as soon as possible,” Rogers tweeted. “We will continue to keep you updated as we have more information to share.”

Meanwhile, Downdetector , which another hugely popular and reputable site for checking outages, has recorded a massive spike for users reporting Rogers issues. Several sources are also reporting payment services at many banks have been interrupted.

Not only has people’s livelihoods and communications been affected but many city police forces in Ontario are warning residents that the some people’s ability to call 911 is impacted and asked people not to use 911 to report outages.

Metrolinx has also tweeted to customers that transit tickets can’t be purchased using debit or credit payments.

As of 8:00 am there has been no word on how long this outage will last. As you may recall back in April 2021 Rogers phone and internet service went down for several hours mostly in Southern Ontario, the Greater Montreal Area and Calgary and the cause was a software update.
